Brief Outline:  The students listen to a brief story about the death of Hello Kitty. Then, using those clues, they ask their friends questions to determine who is the murderer.

Materials Needed

  • DunDunDunDetective worksheet

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Dun-Dun-Dun is Japanese for 'Bum-Bum-Bum', the surprise sound right before a surprise is revealed.
  2. Give the facts:
    • Hello Kitty was killed yesterday. She was found dead at her house. There was a [insert your textbook's name] and two donuts at the scene of the crime. The killer is in this room. You must find the killer!
  3. Use this information to find the killer:
    • The killer is one of these three things: teacher, singer or T.V. star.
    • The killer was in one of these five places: Hello Kitty's house, Shimin Plaza,  school or  [insert a local park's name].
    • The killer did one of these four things: eat apples, eat donuts, study English or take pictures.
  4. Give each student a mission card. As listed above, there is a job, a place and an action written on each card.
  5. The students read and remember their card, and then they
start asking their friends questions to find the killer, for example: "Are you a teacher," "Were you at Hello Kitty's house," "Did you eat donuts?"
  6. Based on the facts and the mission cards, the student who answers yes to all three of the above questions is the killer.

    Teaching Suggestions:

    • Make sure the student with the 'killer card' understands that he or she is the killer.

    Cautions:

    • On the worksheet, make sure you type in a local park in your area.
